  1. SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW 39 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears on the cover of SFR 39, edited and published by Richard Geis. Drawing title: The Aliens

At this time I was getting published regularly in both fan and pro publications, but I was not prepared to give up my job at Simmonds to go freelance full time. After all, I was earning a good salary, I had a month of vacation time with pay, medical coverage for myself and my family, sick days paid for, and you don't throw all that away for an unknown future as an illustrator with none of those benefits. Not if you are a family man. (But incredibly, that's just what I ended up doing)

My original plan was to do some professional illustration work in my spare time, to make a little extra money after I retired from "working for a living". I did not expect to do it on a full time basis. And, I did not expect it to happen for at least another 20 years!

But it happened a lot sooner!
